Faulkner’s ‘A Rose for Emily’ is a short story, which reflects the life of women in the American South in late 1800s. Throughout the story, he shows the solitary life and the collapse of one rich woman named Emily. In this story, we can see that there is a description of the portrait of Ms. Emily’s father. Portraits are pieces of artworks that reflect the era at that time as well. In this written assessment, I will use the text type narrative and describe my chosen portrait, which was drawn at the same time that this story was written. Through the detailed description of the portrait, I will show the culture and lifestyle of American South in late 1800s where Ms. Emily has lived.
This written assessment shows the topic option of social relationship and specially addresses the topic of the collapse of the celebrations in Southern US in late 1800s. I chose a narrative because this will be a great tool to describe my portrait in detail. This detailed description also leads to showing us the background of American South in late 1800s.

Finally, I got a permission to visit Ms. Emily’s house. When I arrived the Ms. Emily’s house, it looked like a haunted house, which is usually described in some mystery novels. Even though the house itself was built by using expensive marble and other luxurious building materialsand quality accessories, most of them got rusty. I passed through a big metal gate and some broken wooden fences. A Negro, who is a servant of this house, guided me to a living room. “I need to inform Ms. Emily that a visitor is arrived.” A Negro said. I looked around the living room. It was a neat, gorgeous room that reflects Ms. Emily’s past. Soon, that Negro came back. “Follow me.” He said. I walked through the dark, dusty hall. There was antiquefurniture, which seemed as thoughit has not been used for a long time. The leather couch was all cracked and covered with green mold. The old wood table seemed as if it had already collapsed. At the end of the dank hall, there was a tarnished silver easel, which has a portrait of a woman sitting on a bench.
I stood up in front of the portrait and looked it carefully. There was a mysterious woman with bright brown hat on her head. That graceful woman wore a gorgeous silk dress and a fur coat and it seemed that she was reading a book seriously. Her face was really white and pale just like a white sculpture in this town. However, one strange thing was that only the background was really dark just like a night sky. That dull background was such a contrast to the woman who has milky skin and bright garments on her body. The woman had a mild, benevolent smile. The woman was sitting on the brown antique chair, which was similar to one that was in the Ms. Emily’s living room. After looking at that portrait, that portrait reminded me of Ms. Emily’s past. Because I had heard that Ms. Emily was a glorious woman just like a woman in the portrait. But she also had gloomy atmosphere as same as today.
I followed a Negro. When a Negro arrived at Ms. Emily’s room, he knocked the door twice. “Come on in!” Ms. Emily said.
