Sports was one of the earliest forms of unification in our world. It's history tracing back to the early years of the human race. Entertainment and the will to compete contributed to the creation of sport. It was the birth of sport that gifted us with the earliest forms of gathering, unification and congregation. An exemplar to support my notion would be the cave paintings, which date back to 7000 BC. They were discovered in Mongolia, depicting athletes engaging in wrestling while being surrounded by onlooking crowds. Though early sport was regarded in some cases to be violent, it cannot be denied sport was what united people.
Today, basketball will be the subject of my praise. Basketball is what gave the world some of the greatest athletes alive today, it is the sport that inspired a new generation of youth. It's history traces back to Springfield, Massachusetts 1891 where Dr. James Naismith invented the game to condition athletes in the wintertime. Nothing impressive, did the score of the first game turn out to be. But what followed in the wake of the creation of the game basketball was beyond astounding. The game expanded quickly beyond the college in which it was played, expanding through different colleges, the nation—then the world.
At a glance, many do not understand the many virtues that basketball helps one achieve. Many may not understand the passion and the sacrifice required to play the sport. Many may not understand the burden that each and every player bears when they step out onto the court. Many may not understand the enormous pressure that would crush stones the player carries during a free shot, not knowing whether or not he will make it in. Basketball not only congregates the audience when they view the games, but it brings together the people within the team. Each and every player is a member of the family. The inseparable, unbroken family that will stick together and bear whatever hardships are thrown in the way. Each player learns to be patient, to be accepting, to forget individuality but to embrace the team. The art of behind winning the game of basketball is not through the commitment or talent of one player, but through the commitment of every, single player.
Ironically, however basketball starts from the individual. The individual driven by the will to succeed, the will to reach the peak, it all starts by stepping onto the court. Having a court and a basketball is all one needs, the sight of the ball landing in the hoop is the allure of the very game. It sounds simple does it not? But to get the ball through the net in the perfect arc is not as easy to master. Frustration can overcome one and lead one to give up. But this is where another virtue that basketball brings can be identified; commitment and perseverance. One who does not give up and persists to strive towards their goal, will be rewarded with skill and excellence; one who does not will never achieve the goal, they will falter in life since they never rise up to confront the challenges they face.
In short, basketball is more than a sport. It cannot be compared to individual sports, such as pool or racket sports. Though they require similar persistence to succeed, they do not involve the importance of teamwork. Teamwork and the cooperating moves beyond the realm of sport but into the basics of what society requires. When one reaches the age when they are qualified to work, they will have to get along with others. Their careers will depend on the cooperation they have. Basketball not only introduces it, but it mothers it and raises it through adolescence until it is deemed to be mature. Basketball extends beyond the court, beyond the game and out into society. It incorporates itself into daily, every day life and it helps prepare people to face the many, many challenges that society poses. It encourages people to pick themselves up and face whatever there is for the reward, it brings people together and makes them into a family, and it proves that everything is achievable through hard work and commitment.
