Athletes as a good role model
Sports has been with us for generations and has come to play and integral part of the entertainment industry in today. Competition between athletes is such great entertainment that we all like to watch. Athletes who have shown outstanding skills and brought new records to history, will draw great attention from audiences. Nowadays, people have started to expect not only individual skills, bit a good characteristic which is commonly known as “sportsmanship”. Some people would claim that skills count everything, while others would consider sports personalities as the principle. In my opinion, I agree the idea of latter that famous athletes can be a good role model since they have enormous effect upon youth.
Since famous athletes have distinct skills, majority of youth would have them as their “dream player”. Once you had engaged in one particular sport, you all have some athletes who you wanted to be. In my case, my dream player was Michael Jordan. His dunk shot was too impressive that I wanted to imitate his play style. This happens to all the generations that it is inevitable to say sports personalities do not influence youth. One athlete who has practiced more than others and finally achieved his dream, is already a good role model. In this way, athletes can directly motivate youth as being their role model.
However, we cannot say that every athlete has a good personality. Some athletes might do illegal things for the sake of earning or simply, to be famous. In the past, there was a shocking event that discouraged many people. One of the most famous 100m sprinter, Carl Luis broke the new record with the use of drugs, known as doping. It was the beginning of the dark history that triggered other athletes to start using drugs. Nowadays, there are still some athletes who were suspended for doping. Such incidents which lead us to lose trustworthy toward sports, shall not happen anymore. The most important thing is the loss of good role models for youth. Wrong role models lead youth to follow a wrong pathway.
Since we can assume that youth follow famous athletes, their characteristics should be associated with morality. We admit that athletes’ skills are indispensable factor in sports, yet the consideration of sports personalities is needed to maintain the sporting world.
