‘Hills like White Elephants’, by Hemingway, is a short novel based upon American couple at Madrid train station, discussing whether to get an abortion or not. From both unnamed male and female, neither of them speaks truly to each other. Both talk, but do not listen or understand other’s point of view.
This short novel conveys the main theme of talking versus communication, through man and his girlfriend.
One of the characters that represent the symbol of the title and the theme effectively is the female. Hemingway has briefly written the novel with lack of descriptions, but still expresses the confusion and difficulties of their major decision. One of the familiar Hemingway’s text types, of putting the readers in the thinking box to imagine beyond the story by less descriptions. Since there is no clear view of each characters individual point, the novel closes with unclear decision which could have brought more disharmonies.
The aim of this written assignment is to state the female’s feelings after the end of the conversation with the man. On the way in train, the female writes personal diary to herself and from this text type it would bring much clear understanding of female’s point of view about the major decision; abortion. By contrasting with Hemingway’s way of describing the female character, I have focused more on expressing and showing more personal feelings based on the female, which has not been mentioned anything about the female’s perspective in the novel.
