This story is mainly about Ms Emily’s house of which describes Ms Emily’s life. It tells what happened 30 years before in which there was communication between two tax collectors because the smell from the house Ms Emily’s house was luxury and it was probably very expensive, but it was covered with dust and smelly. This happened two years after her father had died and her boyfriend had left her. The main purpose of my work is to express how Ms Emily experienced her life with the sad events relates to her father and her lover. I am going to create a character who was working with the tax collectors and add a dialog between two collectors. I will write about how this person feels upon seeing the painting of Ms Emily’s father and Ms Emily and how this portrait might reflect the events of her past life. This task will be related to the literary text through description of the overall impression of "the crayon portrait of Ms Emily’s father" in the story.
It was January 23rd , I was a tax collector. I stood with my partner and waited for Ms Emily. Because I came to this place for only 3 weeks, I didn't know what kind of person Ms Emily was. When I was waiting, I saw an old painting of an old man. He was sitting on a chair, wearing glasses, and looking incredibly serious, as though he had some important messages. It was an old American fashion style. His hair was black, he weared a black coat which I thought was an uniform. Almost everything including the background was black except for his army pants and face. I believe that he was Ms Emily's father, for his mood was kind of like Miss Emily's, strict. For me, the way he was sitting and looking forward showed that he was confident, doing something important with his life, thus I claimed that Ms Emily was confident on doing something as well, had and owned an important social status and a strict emotion. Personally, I thought that he had something very sad and that certain events had changed his overall emotion or even the attitude towards his whole life. There is no specific physical evidence behind my thought, but I could guess it by knowing everything was "black" in which his overall expression within the color of clothes shows strict emotion.
I then looked around the room which was valuable, the design of the room was comfortable, but it was covered by dust and it was very old. There was dust everywhere in the room. I could guess that the room was smelly because it was unclean.
“Why doesn’t’t she clean her house? Value of the room would be wasted if she doesn’t” I asked my partner.
“Because she feels comfortable about the room and she doesn’t care what other people are going to say including us!”
“I see. She seems like she had something bad happen to her in the past.” I said.
“Yeah, her boyfriend left her. I mean, the person who Ms Emily loved left her, I am not sure if he was her boyfriend. He was the only man who was intimate with her except for her father. Many people's hearts bleed for her."
"So that is why she is thinking and doing negatively? I am sorry to hear that."
“What about her father?”I said.
“He died."
“Is that the reason why she is always refusing others?”I said.
“ Yeah, I think so. When the funeral was going on, she didn't want to believe that her father died, perhaps she loved her father very much even thought we think her father is strict, so she was refusing other people and didn't want to attend the funeral."
"I think I can kind of understand her feeling. I have lost a relative 10 years ago as well."
"Don't be puffed up with conceit. You can't understand her sadness, and I can't either. Nobody is able to understand it. The only person that possibly can understand is her father." My partner said seriously.
"I agree." I answered with a lower tone.
I understood that no one could fully understand how Ms Emily's was suffered and how she thinks of the sadness because she doesn't have any relatives or friends which she doesn’t try to communicate with people any more after those events.
