The comparison of A Soldiers Home and Kew Gardens
Ernest Hemingway’s “A soldier’s home” and Virginia Woolf’s “Kew Gardens”, are short stories. They both use techniques to keep the characters thoughts to be remain hidden. In Hemingway’s writing he creates this scene of how the character experiences the world once he came back from the war. "At first Krebs...did not want to talk about the war at all. Later he felt the need to talk but no one wanted to hear about it" in this scene, Hemingway writes very simple which make it boring, it shows what the character feels and hides his thought. On the other hand, Virginia Woolf is very detailed and descriptive. Both stories use different techniques in order to hide the characters thoughts.
The main characters in “A Soldiers home” is Krebs. After the war ended, all the soldiers returned home apart from Krebs, who returned a year later. He missed the hysteria that that took place in his home town. All the people were listening to the gruesome stories told by the soldiers that came back home, though most of the stories were exaggerated. But when Krebs wanted to tell his stories nobody listened to him, no one wanted to listen to the real event because it was boring, so Krebs lied. He felt horrible about it and stopped talking about the war stories. The story continues to discus Krebs life after the war in his point of view.
Kew Garden is a short story about characters that wander into the park and recalling their memories. The first couple to appear are a married couple that have children. The Husband starts to remember a memory about how he proposed to his old lover “Lily” and how on that day all he remembered was the dragonflies. His current wife, Eleanor, remembers her first kiss, how she enjoyed it and remembers the affection she hadn’t had for a long time. They both talk to each other about what happened but never what they were feeling.
Hemingway uses the iceberg technique, where he gives a little detail but it has a deeper meaning. With Krebs in A soldiers Home, he continues to live his life plainly. He lives with his parents, his faith was everything for him and because of the war, he lost his faith and he lost himself. They way Hemingway writes about how Krebs feels and how he views his surroundings, feeling. Everything is boring for him, nothing is an anchor for him, and by reading through the passage one can see that he is depressed. That is the technique used to hide the characters thought, because he never says or explains how he felt, just what he sees and thinks about that.
In Kew Garden the couple that walks in the garden together, talks about what they remember. The husband is still in love with Lily, his former lover and his current wife Eleanor, knows that he is still in love with the women that rejected him 10 years before. This is seen as the last time she felt affection was when “old grey-haired woman with a Wart on her nose” (71) kissed her back when she was a child. They are in a loveless marriage and they have no affection for one another. Woolf explains this by making the characters remember the past by using symbolism through the “dragonflies” (70) .This is how the husband remembers Lily and for Eleanor the “water lilies”. By recalling the characters past events, Woolf allows the readers to understand their hidden thoughts.
Woolf and Hemingway are incredible writers that have used many techniques to conceal the thoughts of the characters. Hemingway is known for his iceberg technique, shows only the a little of the characters, but has a deeper meaning. For example Krebs, come back from the war and struggles to return to his regular life. Hemingway uses simple wording to show how Kreb feels throughout the story. Virginia Woolf uses allusions in her stories to hide the characters thought, like the “dragonflies” for the husband, thinking of his past love and “water lilies” for Eleanor thinking of the last time she felt affection. Woolf and Hemingway uses different techniques to mask the characters which are both very effective.
