Where you end up is based on your behavior
We can learn about different behaviors and manners in Homer`s Odyssey. There are kind, smart and greedy characters in it.
Princess Nausikka, even at a young age, she is very thoughtful. She is helping Odysseus to get to a place so he can find a way to go back home. She said “we go through the countryside and farmland” (book 6, line 274) to Odysseus because she is aware that there will be rumors about a princess being with a man, which is not allowed. Being a princess people will talk about you more. It is because you are in an important position. Almost all the people in the kingdom will know that she is the princess and then words will spread. That is why she told Odysseus that they are going to go where there isn`t many people. This is to prevent gossip, making her parents angry at her and to prevent them from looking bad that her daughter was with a man.
Odysseus is smart because when he got him and his men trapped in a cave because when he landed after the storm he found food and sheep’s so he entered the cave. After a moment later when (the Giant) the Kyklops closed the door. That is how they got trapped. He didn`t just kill the giant named Kyklops who lived in the cave, because he had a rock door which only the Kyklops could open. He thought ahead, so instead of killing him, Odysseus offered him wine and said “here`s liquor to wash down your scraps of men” (book 9, line 366) He said that because he ate his men so there could be bits and pieces left and wine will help it flow into our tummy. He acted very natural so the Kyklops trusted him and drank the wine. Odysseus seems generous but he was actually weakening him by giving alcohol so he would be less strong. He made Kyklops less strong so he later can torture him without killing him. Before they torture the giant, they have to make sure that the giant isn`t strong so they would just end up being eaten.
Since Odysseus is smart, brave and etc, his crews were jealous of him. While Odysseus fell asleep “the crew began to parley” (book 10, line 38) about a bag he got from Aiolos`. They were trying to guess what was in that bag. They thought there would be gold and silver in the bag. The crew said “he`s welcome everywhere” (book 9, line 42). They are showing jealousy. They also said that “he brought along so many presents” (book 9, line 44). They are tired of Odysseus getting all the presents. One of the crew member said “I say we ought to crack that bag” (book 9, line 48). They wanted to open the bag and take the gold for themselves which was being greedy of them. It turns out it was neither gold nor silver but a wind to help them go home. Since they used it selfishly they are back to where they started.
‘The Odyssey’ shows lots of different characters with different personalities, how they behave which leads to avoiding future troubles. Princess Nausikka and Odysseus planned ahead they weren`t in trouble but the crew opening the bag without asking,-or they could have just asked Odysseus to share the presents- instead they got back to the beginning of their way back home.
