We stood front of the locked steel door and quietly waited. The solid iron door seemed to unwelcome guests. Finally, we are allowed by the old Negro come into the house. We walked through the garden and I saw nothing was alive there, no trees, no grass and no flower in garden. I should not call it as a garden. I was a first man who crossed a doorsill and inside was full of darkness. Because I cannot see through darkness, it stimulated the sense of smell. I could smell what I have never experienced before. It is impossible to explain how was the smell but I was pretty sure that everyone mightfrownhis or herown face. When the Negro opened the blinds of one window, I could see the leather of furniture was cracked and everything was just set with collecting dust. Right after I sat down, I got up from the gathered dust furniture, I could leave a trace accidentally. Arounded table, achair with long leg and the frame of picture were gilt but the gorgeousness of them was hidden by out of care.Everything seemed to be out of human’s hands. It made me feel that I just came here to excavate treasure. We sat on the cracked leather couch until Miss Emily appeared. I was waiting around 15 minutes but it was not boring that much because I was busy to appreciate that classical house. I found a crayon portrait of Miss Emily’s father on a tarnished gilt easel before the fireplace stood.
I could see a receding hairline of him but it was still stately with tightly closed lips. He seemed to stare me but actually his sight was not clearly on front. His curly hair that was gently combed covered his ears. I could not recognize a hollow thing on his face whether it is a dimple or not but it was definitely effective for favorable impression. He covered his skin with light colored of scarf. I could see his dainty habits from his appearance.
Eventually Miss Emily entered – fat and small woman in darkness, with a thin gold chain to her waist and vanishing into her belt, leaning on an ebony cane with a tarnished gold head. Those accessories might be not separate with her since she started to lose interest to take care of her. This dark, gloomy and lifeless house corresponded to her state.
